Caldicot Library: should we change our opening hours?

In the two Public Library User Surveys (Adults – November 2010, Children & Young – Peoples February 2011) commissioned by Monmouthshire County Council and analysed by CIPFA Social Research (the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) there were comments from both adults and children about Caldicot Library’s opening hours.

At the moment the library is open 6 days a week but is closed on 3 afternoons (Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays).

We would like to amend our opening hours during the Autumn, so that the library is accessible all day on Fridays and closed all day on Mondays. We would also like to open at 9am on Wednesdays; instead of 9.30am (Chepstow Library is closed on a Wednesday so this would increase accessibility for the whole area).

We believe that opening on Friday afternoons will be an improvement as it will:

  • Enable more children to use the library out of school hours
  • Help children and young people who have homework to complete over the weekend
  • Encourage working people who finish work early on a Friday to visit us

The new opening hours would be:

Tuesday 9.00 – 7.00
Wednesday 9.00 – 5.30
Thursday 9.00 – 7.00
Friday 10.00 – 5.30
Saturday 9.00 – 1.00

It is important that these proposed changes are what our customers want and we are issuing questionnaires to everyone who visits the library during the next few weeks. We are also using twitter (@fablibrarian) to spread the word. More information is available on the Caldicot Library blog.

Public Library User Surveys

Following the consultation with adult customers using all of our libraries in November, data is being analysed and results will be back with us within the next few weeks. Our Children and Young People survey is taking place in all libraries during the week commencing 28th February 2011. Under 16s will have the opportunity to write or draw their ideas for a better library service.
