“A welcome change which will be of great benefit to all”
“Excellent idea and more convenient for our family”
During July we asked customers what they thought of our plans to change our opening hours. At the moment we are open all day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and closed in the afternoon on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. We would like to open all day Friday and close all day on Monday as we believe this will encourage more children to visit the library.
Most people were in favour of our plans. The results of the survey are:
Would you and/or your family like this proposed change to be made?
73% said yes, 22% said they didn’t mind, 5% said no
How would this change affect your use of the library?
62% said it would be more convenient, 34% said it wouldn’t make any difference, 3% said it would be less convenient (1% didn’t answer this question).
Four customers asked for increased opening hours (Saturday afternoons and open later during the evening).
Some of our customers also took the opportunity to leave comments about the service, including:
“I value my library and the wonderful staff”
“My compliments to library staff for their excellent approach to customer service”
In the two Public Library User Surveys (Adults – November 2010, Children & Young – Peoples February 2011) commissioned by Monmouthshire County Council and analysed by CIPFA Social Research (the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) there were comments from both adults and children about Caldicot Library’s opening hours.
At the moment the library is open 6 days a week but is closed on 3 afternoons (Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays).
We would like to amend our opening hours during the Autumn, so that the library is accessible all day on Fridays and closed all day on Mondays. We would also like to open at 9am on Wednesdays; instead of 9.30am (Chepstow Library is closed on a Wednesday so this would increase accessibility for the whole area).
We believe that opening on Friday afternoons will be an improvement as it will:
Enable more children to use the library out of school hours
Help children and young people who have homework to complete over the weekend
Encourage working people who finish work early on a Friday to visit us
It is important that these proposed changes are what our customers want and we are issuing questionnaires to everyone who visits the library during the next few weeks. We are also using twitter (@fablibrarian) to spread the word. More information is available on the Caldicot Library blog.
