From August 2011, Monmouthshire Libraries will be offering a free service to customers for downloading eBooks.  As a member of the Welsh Public Library Purchasing Consortium, we are working together with colleagues in other libraries to introduce this new service to customers throughout Wales.

The eBooks can be downloaded to most computers, and then transferred to other portable devices such as iPads or iPhones and some eBook readers.  They are not, however, Kindle compatible.

As part of this brand new pilot project, funded by WAG/CyMAL, a wide range of titles will be available, in all genres, covering fiction, non-fiction, and junior titles.

Initially, the number of titles out on loan at any one time within Monmouthshire will be very limited.  Once downloaded, the title remains active on the customer’s device(s) for a fixed time, after which it automatically deletes itself. The Consortium members are consulting together to establish how the service will operate in detail.

The service is provided by Askews & Holts Library Services Ltd, a well-established UK book supplier with a long record of dealing with libraries.

New Downloadable Audio Book Service

Best-selling and classic titles are now available on demand thanks to the introduction of an exciting new service from Monmouthshire Libraries.

A new free download service offers a choice of more than 600 titles and the county’s library users can access these on their computer, MP3 player or iPod.  More titles will be added each month.

Users can register at any library in Monmouthshire or via the Monmouthshire Libraries website where they will be able to download up to 10 titles.  All titles are available with no waiting lists.  Loans automatically expire after three weeks so there is the added bonus of never having to return books and never risking late fees!

The council’s cabinet member for Culture and Environment, Giles Howard said: “I’m really proud of Monmouthshire’s Library Service and pleased that we are able to add yet another service to what is already on offer.  With the available software it couldn’t be easier or more convenient to enjoy a good book, whether in the car, at home or in the bath!  I hope current library members will benefit greatly and that this will encourage new members to take part too.”

Titles available include ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ by Stieg Larsson, Dan Brown’s ‘Lost Symbol’ and ‘Danny Wallace & the Centre of the Universe’ by Danny Wallace.
