Reading Hack/Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer

Aim of volunteering role:

To help our Community Hub/Library staff make Animal Agents, the Summer Reading Challenge 2017, our most successful yet!

The Summer Reading Challenge is an initiative produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries throughout the country.

The aim is to keep children aged 4 to 11 reading throughout the summer holidays. Each child that registers receives a special collector’s folder and incentive cards (some of which are scratch and sniff and rather smelly!) each time they visit the library having read two library books.

Each child that completes the Challenge is rewarded with lovely prizes: a kit bag, a certificate and medal.

Your role would be to:

Help produce displays to promote Animal Agents

Help staff administer the Challenge

Help with summer activities

Help children to use the Summer Reading Challenge web site and app

Help children to choose new books

Age:

This volunteer role is suitable for 13 – 15 year olds

Targets:

We are hoping to increase both the number of children taking part and the number completing the Summer Reading Challenge by 10%. Your enthusiasm could help us achieve this.

 Time:

Flexible time commitment. Preparation for Animal Agents starts on 16th June 2017.  Animal Agents starts on 15th July 2017 and runs throughout the summer holidays.

You will be required to attend 2 free training sessions:

An introduction to the Summer Reading Challenge and

A safeguarding course run by the Youth Service.

Place of work:

Your local Community Hub/Library (Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow, Gilwern, Monmouth, Usk)

Support provided:

Induction and safeguarding training. Support throughout placement from Library Lead/Senior Information Officer based at relevant Community Hub/Library.

Skills required:

  1. An interest in, and enthusiasm for, reading and books
  2. Enjoy encouraging and working with children
  3. Good customer care towards all Community Hub/Library visitors
  4. Good communicator

Bydd rhaid mynychu 2 sesiwn hyfforddi rhad ac am ddim.
