The Friends of Chepstow Library made a successful bid to Chepstow Town Council’s Community Grant Scheme in 2014. With the grant the Garden Friends group have worked with year 8 students at Chepstow School to produce a banner for display on the railings in the ramped area of the library garden.
The students, under the direction of the art teacher Judith Lowery, were asked to produce a banner which would depict a reading journey from young child to adult. They were asked to begin with images for the very young, possibly fairy tale based, carry the imagery into a teenage section and finish with the journey into adulthood and the world of reading opportunities available to anyone who cares to open a cover or turn a page. They were asked to incorporate the local area where possible – Chepstow Castle, the Wye, Chepstow’s old bridge are all represented.
Next time you are in the library or shopping in Chepstow please take a few minutes to visit the library garden and enjoy the Reading Journey art banner. For anyone with more time to spare the library garden is an excellent place to take a book, read a newspaper, use the wifi link or just relax. The library garden is open during daylight hours whenever the library is open.
