Monmouthshire libraries are working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to provide free and accessible cancer information and support to those people who need it.

Along with cancer information areas in all six libraries across the county, Chepstow Library has established an amazing Reading Garden for everyone to use, which now has a really special seating area developed by Macmillan, Staff from the library, the ‘friends of the Reading Garden’ and Joanna Kerr from the National Gardens Scheme.

The team has worked closely together to develop this special shaded seating area, with ideas from people who are themselves affected by cancer. Following cancer treatment there is often reduced sensation in fingers and toes, which can make walking any distance quite difficult.

The aim of the Reading Garden is to provide a shaded space for people to sit, read a book, browse the Macmillan information which is available in the library, or to just relax for a while.

Erica Sheppard, the Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Coordinator, said ‘We wanted to create a special place for people to enjoy and escape to – not just for those people going through cancer but also for their friends, family and carers. This new area offers dappled shade and comfy seating, where people can sit, catch their breath, or to wait while the family goes shopping.’

Everyone is invited to come along to look at and enjoy this new area, and to find out a bit more about the Reading Garden and the cancer information available in the library.

The team are still looking for ideas about what would be the right plants to have around this area so please leave your ideas with a member of library staff or alternatively, Erica will be on hand on Wednesday 11th July at 10am-12 noon in the garden to chat about the new area or to help with finding information on cancer.
